My armies in general take one top notch spy/assassin along (not only does the former clear out foreign spies but he also discovers foreign assassins, useful if one wants to prevent the various mad/paranoid traits). My govs were usually high chiv/piety generals and were generally loved (one trait even said "his foes consider it an honour to die by this man's sword", heh), this definitely gives a fat bonus to governor's influence in keeping the peace.

In my last campaign (late game) my armies usually consisted of the following First they had a 5-10 men armada of religious agents paving the way. All these things can be sorted though and even inspite of 'occupying' the settlement and thus keeping the pop. Main reasons for this are religous unrest, foreign spies (unrest in general, also caused by the former's culture), low garrison, distance to capital, unskilled governor. If my cities do cause trouble it's usually the newly conquered ones. This of course strenghtens one's faction and improves governor traits, because they'll always be able to build new stuff in their cities.

Especially in the beginning I believe it's a sensible thing to do, since trade probably won't be paying off yet and thus taxes will be one's major income. The faster my cities grow the better and I've hardly ever had any problems with this strategy. Tutors and priests aren't a bad idea either, since piety is now somewhat the former 'management' attribute.Īs for growth of cities I generally build stuff I need first (for instance: roads, grain exchange for additional merchants, town hall etc) but I don't hesitate to build farm upgrades either. But probably one of the best is the 'Architect', every governor should have one, +10% construction costs and -2 squalor. Basically all forms of the 'Justice' traits will give you +law bonuses, they just differentiate between additional +chiv/dread or so.Īnother thing which probably meant to help was the 'prototype handgun' ancillary of the assassin, which gives +1 law, doesn't seem to work though.

Lower chiv on the other hand might lead to 'strict justice' or similar. Just top of my head 3+ chiv, town hall, 4+ turns in settlement will give the governor 'Just'. The good thing about them is you can still get them without having to build new buildings.

Well, a thing which'll help against squalor are the various 'Justice' traits.
